  1. Rhetorical Analysis: Malala’s Speech to the UN Common Mistakes/Errors

  2. Common Mistakes in RA Essays: INTRODUCTIONS • ALWAYS introduce the author/title of work in the first introduction paragraph (think rhetorical precis) • After mentioning the author’s full name, refer to them by their LAST NAME only! • Put the year more fluidly in- not in ()!!!

  3. Common Mistakes in RA Essays ESSAY STRUCTURE: • Clear, coherent claim (thesis) that does not simply list all of the rhetorical strategies AND states the PURPOSE • Tying the TS of body paragraphs to the thesis • Tying all EX/CM to the thesis

  4. Common Mistakes in RA Essays • Cohesiveness of the essay • Is a purpose clearly stated in the introduction? • Do all of your TS/quotes/analysis tie to the PURPOSE? • Does your analysis explain HOW rhetorical strategies help the speaker/writer SUPPORT their purpose? • Does your analysis explain the EFFECT the rhetorical strategy has on the audience?

  5. Common Mistakes in RA Essays • Topic sentences: • DO NOT only focus on the rhetorical strategy vs. the purpose! If you are going to mention their use of rhetoric, you need to tie it to the purpose! • Remember our essential question: What is the author’s purpose and how do they use rhetorical strategies to support their purpose? • It’s not the other way around! • TS should NOT simply be a quote!

  6. Common Mistakes in RA Essays • Transitions: You need to tie your ideas together with stronger transitions. Work on fluidly connecting ideas in- • Topic Sentences • Within the paragraph

  7. Common Mistakes in RA Essays • Level of Depth in Analysis • Do not let the quotes “speak” for you- you need to take apart the quote and explain HOW it relates back to the thesis • Go that extra step in explaining how the quote supports your claim/TS • Refer back to sections of the quote and explain how the strategy is effective.

  8. Common Mistakes in RA Essays • Fluid Quote Integration • Go beyond just “She states” or “For example” • Integrate the quotes into the sentence • Malala shows her dedication to others when she proclaims that she “speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves”. • Instead of: • Malala states she “speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves”.

  9. Common Mistakes in RA Essays • Sophistication level of… • DICTION • TRANSITIONS • GRAMMAR • SENTENCE STRUCTURE MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

  10. Miscellaneous Issues • WRITE WITH A PEN • Do not sound unsure: “She tries to” “She probably” “She might be” • ALWAYS write in FORMAL tone • “She wants to make us feel bad” • “She calls out people in her speech”

  11. Miscellaneous Issues • Do not underestimate the connotative effect of words: • Malala attacks… • Malala lures… • What effect does that have on the reader?

  12. Miscellaneous Issues • Always write in PRESENT tense • Summary vs. Analysis? • Why doesn’t anyone know how to spell “address”??? • ADRESS is not a word. 
