STF CHINA – SIGNIFICANCE • China is a rising Research and Development power with aspirations to excel on the world stage. • Scientific output (research peer-reviewed articles) is rising and in many areas China is already among the 4/5 most active countries worldwide. • European Union wants to become an increasingly credible partner in China’s fast growing research environment. • EU is interested in creating stronger ties with Chinese research institutions through an exchange of people and knowledge
WHAT IS STF? WHAT? STF is a brand new EU programme to promote the mobility of its researchers towards the Chinese research and development area. HOW? By facilitating the participation of outgoing European researchers in Chinese research and development programmes. FINAL RESULT: Sustainable links and research partnerships between EU and Chinese research institutions and between individual researchers should be established.
STF – THE CONCEPT Provide EU fellowships to young EU scientists and researchers for a: 6 month tailor-made Chinese language and research culture training followed by 18 months practical research period in a top-class Chinese research institution.
STF – THE FIRST INTAKE Start 01 April 2009 30 young qualified EU researchers EU sending organization from 12 EU Member States Top-class Chinese host institutions from different locations all over China and HK Wide range of research topics: from biology, via energy, to law, and arts
BENEFITS FOR FELLOWS Solid understanding of the Chinese language and its culture Ability to function in a Chinese research environment Broaden their horizon through exposure to the East Asian way of living and doing
BENEFITS FOR EU Mobility of EU researchers to China increased Number of collaborative projects involving the EU and China increased
BENEFITS FOR CHINA Intensified scientific collaboration at institutional level with the EU sending organization of the Fellows Direct benefits through the presence of an EU researcher in the Chinese institution
CONCLUSIONS STF will help the EU to become an increasingly credible partner in China’s fast-growing research environment Long term approach to build up a stock of EU scientists knowledgeable about China’s research environment
