About the Project • Sponsors • Internet Archive • Library of Congress – NDIIPP and TPS • California Digital Library • Modest Objectives • Create “time capsules” of Web content from a kid’s perspective • Raise awareness of transitory nature of Web content • See what happens
Teaching with Primary Sources • 24 partners across 12 states • Focus on using the Library’s historical collections of primary sources to spark inquiry • Help students to understand the changing nature of primary sources in a digital world • Think critically about how primary sources define an era
NDIIPP • To ensure access over time to a rich body of digital content through the establishment of a national network of committed partners. • Created by federal legislation (PL 106-554) in December 2000
Marrying the Programs • NDIIPP’s Web harvesting component focuses on capturing and preserving these digital primary sources • TPS focuses on helping students understand primary sources and their historical context
Benefits • Student perspective represented in Web site selection • Students gain a better understanding of primary sources by participating in decisions about what gets saved • Student empowerment and pride
Student Lessons Learned • Understanding both the permanence and non-permanence of web content • Importance of primary sources • Students from diverse areas share many commonalities • Common interests despite cultural and geographic diversity
