  1. 29.3 Part 2

  2. Planetary Nebula • Cloud of electrically charged gas particles formed by certain types of stars as they die • During the red giant phase of a stars life (when the Hydrogen in the core has burned out but Hydrogen near the core reacts and electrifies the outer layers) the ultraviolet radiation from the core ionizes the outer later gases and they emit light

  3. NGC 6543- Example of Planetary Nebula

  4. White Dwarf • Dense stars (mass of Sun, volume of Earth) • Final evolutionary state of all stars whose mass is not too high (97% of all stars); nursing home phase • Normal star behavior (fusing He from H) • Red giant (He fused to C) • Sheds its outer layers in a planetary nebula • If C cannot be fused at the core, a white dwarf forms • Over time, a white dwarf cools and its color changes since fusion is no longer happening

  5. Supernova (for stars bigger than the sun) • Shorter life (burns fuel quicker) • Many red giant experiences • Star explodes- nuclear core pushes out the material from the outer layers of a star • This lasts for weeks or months often producing as much light as the sun produces in it’s entire lifetime

  6. Supernova
