  1. Interaction with Circulation Systems (NCIP or SIP) in Colombo

  2. Integration? • VDX enables communication with other ILL systems. • Integrating with circulation systems will also allow ILL to interact with local circulation systems. • This integration is possible with systems using either NCIP or SIP (3M).

  3. What is NCIP? • NCIP= NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol. • SIP = 3M Standard Interchange Protocol • Messages are all initiated by VDX.

  4. Advantages for the Borrower Creation of temporary bibliographic records and copies when documents are received in VDX. VDX will put the document “On Reserve” for the user VDX will check the local circulation status Renewals VDX will check items back in before returning them to the lender.

Benefits for the Lender • VDX will reserve the document which has been requested for loan. • VDX will check out the document when it is shipped and check it back in when the document is returned. • Loans may be renewed. • If the user cancels their request, VDX will cancel the document reservation if it has not yet been shipped.

  6. GENERAL ADVANTAGES • Simplified workflow. • Elimination of duplicate data entry. • VDX and the circulation system may use rules in order to establish the due dates and renewal policies, rather than library staff having to know these rules and apply them. • Changes to circulation policies do not have to be copied in VDX. • ILL staff will no longer need to be trained to use circulation systems.
