  1. IOC UNESCO “Baltic Floating University” Programme – towards international integration of marine education Lev Karlin, Tatjana Eremina, Alexandra Ershova Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU)

  2. “Baltic Floating University” is a component of the UNESCO “Floating University” programme. The basic principle developed and applied through the project was named “training-through-research” (TTR). • The Baltic branch was introduced by Russian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU) in 1993 in frames of UNESCO TEMA programme (Training, Education and Mutual Assistance) L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  3. Baltic Floating University – is a long-term educational project. • The “Training-Through-Research” (TTR) principle is being developed and applied through the project. TTR programme puts together the advantages of the formal training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and young scientists with the experiences gained in advanced research. L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  4. The Baltic Floating University gives training for young generation of researchers in collecting and analyzing hydrometeorological and ecological data and in view of promoting regional and inter-regional cooperation between universities that teach marine science and integrated coastal zone management. • Between 1993 and 2009 over 270 students and young researchers from 28 countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and South America have participated in the BFU project. L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  5. Participant countries in 1993-2009 L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  6. A recognized BFU peculiarity is a two-ship operation. • BFU uses in parallel two training platforms: a big oceanographic vessel for studies in the open Baltic Sea and a sailing catamaran for investigations in its shallow coastal waters. L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  7. Oceanographic stations in the Baltic Sea L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  8. BFU educational cycle • shipboard data collection, processing and analysis L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  9. BFU educational cycle • daily lectures and seminars on various aspects of marine science L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  10. BFU educational cycle • mid-cruise and post-cruise workshops and conferences for students and researchers to present results of their work • mid-cruise seminars at the ports of call provide for enhanced regional cooperation and knowledge-sharing L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  11. BFU educational cycle • training in writing reports and research papers • annual publication of the research results in “BFU Research Bulletin” L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  12. International educational collaboration • Cruise data are used for writing B.Sc. and M.Sc. Theses: • Clare Hynes, Plymouth University, UK B.Sc. , supervisor prof. M.Shilin (RSHU) • Patricia Isabel Laginha Pereira da SilvaUniversity of Algarve, Master Thesis, supervisor Dr. T.Eremina (RSHU) L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  13. International educational collaboration • The BFU project has stimulated the development of international contacts with other European universities: Cadiz (Spain) Aveiro (Portugal) Plymouth (UK) • This cooperation implies the student exchange and joint seminars. Students of these Universities take part in annual summer cruises of the Baltic Floating University. L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  14. BFU provides the experience of various scientific research and also the international communication for students • Through this BFU promotes the students’ participation in other European projects such as Erasmus Mundus programme - a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  15. THANK YOU L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)

  16. The scientific component of BFU programme have contributed to inter-programme cooperation in frames of development of operational oceanographic systems for the Baltic region, such as BOOS (Baltic Operational Oceanographic System), and ECOOP (European Coastal sea Operational Observing and Forecasting system) • BFU students are involved in these projects L.Karlin, T.Eremina, A.Ershova (RSHU)
