Menhaden (Brevoortiatyrannus, Brevoortiapatronus) • Member of the Herring family • Short lifespan (1-3 years) • Surface feeder- Feed on Phytoplankton- (low environmental contaminants) • High oil yielding fish, naturally rich in EPA and DHA • The female menhaden can lay up to 362,000 eggs. Typical 50,000 to 100,000

Gulf Menhaden Plants (1955-Present) * The peak number of Gulf plants was 14 in 1968 – TODAY 4 * Vessel count peaked at 82 vessels in 1965, 1971 and 1976 – TODAY 34* Highest fishing effort was 1983 at 655,800 vessel tons weeks – TODAY 350,000 * Highest catch year was 1984 with 982,100 MT – TODAY 500,00 MT
