Important Tips to Make Your Child Have a Successful Year… • Keep up to date on what is going on at school through Friday newsletters and the website. • If your child will be absent, please let the school know as soon as possible. • Short absences: I will send make-up work when your child returns to school. • Extended absences: Please arrange to pick up your child’s work at the school office.

Homework Policy • Your child will bring home homework at the beginning of each week. • We encourage you to work with your child. • Packets are due every Friday or the last day of the week. • Completion grade

Home Folder • Please return the home folder each day emptied. • Put any notes for me in the folder. • If you send money, please label it with your child’s name, teacher’s name and what the money is for. • Students are responsible for taking out notes when they return to school • They’ve been doing great with this!
Specials • We have PE everyday. • Please make sure your child has a separate pair of shoes that are left at school everyday. • If your child can’t tie his/her own shoes please send them to school with Velcro shoes. • Music • Every Monday • Students perform at Holiday Program • Art • Every Wednesday • Cultural Arts Festival/Art to Remember • Library Day • Every Friday • Students will check out 2-3 books. Return by the following Friday. • Students may not be able to check out if books are not returned.
Birthdays • Students’ birthdays will be celebrated in the classroom • Only non-edible treats (i.e. pencils, erasers, small toys) may be sent • All students receive a birthday book from Mrs. DeMarzo
Snack • We have snack after PE at 1:25 everyday. • Snack lasts 10 minutes so please make sure food can be eaten during this time. • Fresh fruits, veggies, crackers • No juice boxes, but water bottles are welcomed.
Field Trips • We will be taking a few field trips this year. • PTA Donations increased • Brookfield Zoo at the end of the year. • More info to come as other trips are planned
Mystery Reader • Please sign up to be a mystery reader. • Choose month • Can be a parent or other family member • Come to school dressed up as a storybook character with your book • Students will guess character and true identity. • Please keep it a secret when you come.
Tips for First Graders • Talk to your child: • Ask your child to talk about his/her day at school. Encourage him/her to explain thinking. • Say silly tongue twisters: • Sing songs, read rhyming books, and say tongue twisters. This makes children sensitive to sound and will in turn help them be better writers and readers. • Connect books to experiences: • Making connections helps improve comprehension. • Write it down. • Encourage your child to write down experiences that have happened
