Adult ESL Classes • Mostly newcomers, very diverse • No need to translate • Trusted source of information • Motivated learners • Teachers expert in communicating with multicultural population
ESL Partnership Objectives • Produce materials that are useful in teaching & learning English… • …and that are flexible and fun to use in a wide variety of classrooms • Students leave the classroom with specific knowledge about how to recycle used oil and filters… • …and the motivation to tell others in their communities what they have learned.
How it Works • Tailored to each local area: students receive specific oil recycling information. • ESL teachers are oriented to the lesson and key messages. • Teachers receive a stipend upon completion of a class record form. • All class materials are provided, including various teaching aids.
lesson started OUTCOMES to Date • Currently in use in about 30 jurisdictions in 20 counties • 1,240 classes taught to date, well over 12,000 students • Over 50 different languages • Increased collection of used motor oil 7%
Regional Spanish Outreach • radio and print media have coverage ranging from very local to broadly regional • events may draw from a wide region • bilingual hotlines: very flexible and cost-effective method.
