TEC Integrationfocus: progress on TEC+ CMS Tracker General Meeting 21. 6. 2005 Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Organization of the Project Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Status of TECs • TEC+ • mechanical assembly of structure completed • optical fibers installed • prototype cooling pipes and cables tested • moved to integration clean room at RWTH Aachen • 2 petals have been operated inside TEC+ • TEC- • disks stacked on granite table • ready for service channel integration • magnet test mock-up • ready for shipment to Karlsruhe for finalintegration • DAQ test mock-up • insertion of 18 petals has started Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
New Integration Clean Room at RWTH Aachen • extension of existing clean room by 50 m² • class 100.000 • construction finished on June 3 Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
TEC+ moved into integration clean room at RWTH AachenJune 10, 2005 Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Installation and Test of 2 Petals in TEC+ • two back petals (one from system test and one production type) have been mounted in TEC+ last week • insertion (still without tool) went fine without any damage to the petals • read-out chain (borrowed from petal reception) • final optical and electrical cables (except for control power and D-sub connectors) • (non-final) PMC-FEDs + O-FEDs/ECs + TSC + O-FEC • ~final CAEN PSMs (D-sub connectors) • this system can read out 48 APVs ~ 8 modules << 1 petal • this read-out system can NOT be used for TEC integration • grounding and shielding scheme not fully implemented • cooling through prototype services using C8F18 • each petal has been characterized • cosmic muons have been recorded: first particles in TEC+! • big effort of Katja Klein, Richard Brauer, Martin Weber, Michael Wlochal and many morethanks to Aachen 3 for providing the petals Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen

Noise of R4 and R5 Modules in TEC+ PRELIMINARY Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Common Mode of Modules in TEC+ PRELIMINARY Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
S/N of R4 Module in TEC+ PRELIMINARY S/N all clusters S all clusters cluster multiplicity S/N 1 strip clusters Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
S/N of R5 Module in TEC+ PRELIMINARY S/N all clusters S all clusters cluster multiplicity S/N 1 strip clusters Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Correlation of hit position on different modules first cosmic muons in TEC+ PRELIMINARY Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Results VERY PRELIMINARY • all measurements in peak mode, only rough adjustment of timing • stable read out, control ring and I2C communication • ENC noise consistent with test beam results • no indication for excessive common mode noise • S/N roughly as expected, taking into account broad distribution of angle of incidence • correlated hits on both petals cosmic muons detected • valuable „early“ experience with TEC integration Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Areas of Concern • routing of fiber ribbons and connectorssolved, but still suffering from past mistakes • servicespending because of delayed cooling pipe • read-out componentsneed to get them to the places where they are needed • DAQ system…difficult job, but we cannot start without • some more… Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Fiber Channels • arrangement of fiber ribbons in the service channels was not well enough defined when the TEC+ channels were filled in Karlsruhe • TEC+ channels (now mounted on TEC+) need significant rework which is still ongoing (in total about 4 weeks of work for 2 people) • Nick Lumb has compiled a specification document which was finalized at a meeting between Lyon, Aachen and Karlsruhe on May 24 no rework should be needed for the TEC- channels Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Services • cooling pipes are about 6 months late • original supplier did not pass welding QA • now several companies identified which have delivered sample welds which pass the QA testmechanical accuracy of pipes still insufficient • collaboration between Fraunhofer IPT, Lyon and Aachen1 working on a solution • expect first sample of most difficult circuit finished in about 1 week • solid delivery schedule can only be established once a solution is proven to work • multi service cables • all delivered, tested and registered in the DB • are to be mounted onto cooling pipes before integration into TEC • effect on TECs integration if services are ready by September • start “test integration” of TEC+ in July with prototype services • replace prototype services by final ones in September • we believe we can absorb this delay and keep the integration end date Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Read Out Components This system has to be extended to a 4 FED system by mid July! Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Read Out Components Read-out for one sector (18 petals) will be moved from DAQ test to Aachen in mid September. Read-out for one sector (18 petals) will be moved from DAQ test to Aachen in mid September. In November a copy of this system is needed for TEC- integration. Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Commissioning of DAQ System • commissioning of DAQ system for TEC integration should build onxdaq 3.0 • xdaq 3.0 release planned for end of June • DAQ experts will come to Aachen to set up the DAQ systemPROVIDED that all components are available this needs to happen ASAP Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
further Areas of Concern for TEC+ since TEC+ integration should start end of July these open issues will hit TEC+ first • petal reception in Aachen: hardware ready but needs still ~4 weeks of software development and commissioning • sealing of gas volume at the exit of the services needs to be finalized • distribution of dry gas inside the TECs unclear • need a prototype on a time scale of 4 weeks for TEC+ • commissioning of C6F14 cooling system, filling/purging operations … • synchronization of many lines of work Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
DAQ test + commissioning + LT of a TEC sector Goals of the DAQ TEST : Test of 12 % of a complete Tracker partition : 1/4 million channels, 1 « full » crate of FED (11), 2 FEC’s (9 rings), 3 full EASY crates prepare DAQ for integration centres, and check final DAQ performance Performance Tests : • Sector commissioning at room temperature and -20° : Timing, Gain, Pedestal • DAQ and analysis : DB download & upload, Readout frequency, FU+ORCA commissioning analysis, PC architecture for local DAQ Developments : • Integration of DCS in the partition : PSU control, DCU readout • Safety (interlocks) : local system + final ? Goals of commissioning and LT of a TEC sector : • Cross check LT of frist petals at PICs • Development of LT with final read-out for 9 petals Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
DAQ test + commissioning + LT of a TEC sector Status of the DAQ TEST : • Read-out of one loop (1 front + 1 back petal) ready • 10 petals already in Lyon, 18 petals :end of June • FEDs, PSM’s and LIC cables needed : end of June • DAQ commissioning :July • DAQ test :Aug.- mid-Sept. Control room Electronics Room : -Read-out crates -PS crates -Cooling Plant 2x 10 petal racks in cold room : Now eqipped with services and first 2 petals Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen

TEC+ ready for petal insertion by end of July 05 petal insertion and read-out commissioning, grounding and system test in August/September 05 integration of final services planned for September 05 first sector integrated and tested early November 05 TEC+ integration completed by end of April 06 delivery and test at CERN in May and June 06 insertion into tracker tube in July 06 TEC- service channels integratedby August 05 ship to CERN for tracker tube insertion test in September 05 integration of final services at CERN in October 05 first sector commissioning at CERNin November - December 05 TEC- integration completedby June 06 insertion into tracker tubein July 06 TEC integration can be accelerated by parallel integration of 2 sectors, i.e. more manpower Plans for TEC Integration Lutz Feld, RWTH Aachen
Summary • big effort to keep MPR schedule by absorbing several serious delays into re-arrangements of the planning and by injecting additional manpower • insertion test into tracker tube with TEC- instead of TEC+ • integration of TEC- at CERN • additional manpower used to finalize TEC+ structure & services • TEC+ will be ready for petal insertion in about 4 weeks provided the missing components are made available very soon and the ongoing preparatory work can be finished on schedule • installation and test of petals in TEC+ has demonstrated that preparation of facilities is progressing well and that this ambitious goal can be achieved • use experience from TEC+ integration to complete TEC- as efficiently as possible • …being last in the food chain, the integration project has to absorb all delays – help us to finish on time!
