How can you assist your child in their Math class? • Check and sign child’s agenda nightly. • Ask to see the homework & review for tests with your child. • Sign up and check Aspen periodically. • Assist in memorizing multiplication facts through 12. • View teacher website for additional information and help. • E-mail us with concerns. • Insist on school attendance unless child is ill.

15. Language Arts Mrs. Ivers and Mrs. Youmans • Journals/DOL- daily in their composition notebooks • Grammar quizzes and unit tests will be given. • Spelling- Pretests are given. Review (spelling worksheet or an activity with SpellingCity.com), and spelling tests are given every other week. Tests are taken online through the Quia website. • Homework- Please see the agenda or the website. • We use differentiated instruction such as curriculum compacting and flexible grouping across the grade level. Students will meet in guided reading groups, literature circles, and participate in Web quests, and independent learning contracts .

16. Reading • Students will be presented text at the fifth grade level as well as text at their own instructional level. • Stories will include selections from the reading book, novels, short stories, excerpts, and MORE! • Genres covered will include: historical fiction, biographies, tall tales, fantasy, poetry, non-fiction texts, recipes, multimedia texts, folk tales, memoirs, realistic fiction. • All students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes per day outside of school. • Vocabulary words will be presented every other Monday. These may also be found on the teachers’ websites.

17. Writing • In writing this year we will focus on narrative, opinion (persuasive), and informative/explanatory. We will learn the research process and how to properly cite work. Writing and reading will be taught together. • We will have mini-lessons, teacher modeling, writer’s workshops, and more to strengthen students’ writing skills. As we cover these topics we will explore parts of speech, vocabulary, and punctuation. • Students will take the 5th Grade Writing Test in March. Students will be given a genre (narrative, informational, or persuasive) and a topic. We will be preparing for this format through the year.

18. How can I help my child in reading and language arts? • All students are expected to read a minimum of 20 minutes per day outside of school. • Check your child’s agenda daily for upcoming assignments, homework, and other important information. • Visit your teacher’s website for vocabulary words, homework information, links to websites to reinforce curriculum, and to see what we are reading in class. • Talk to your child about their day. Ask questions. • Check Aspen weekly to see grades. • Contact your child’s teacher with any questions or concerns.

21. Science and STEM Labs Every Tuesday Mrs. Ingram and Ms. Reeves will co-teach with Mrs. Bailey in the STEM Lab or Mrs. Garland in the Science Lab. Days in the Science Lab will focus on Hands On – Minds On Learning both indoors and outside based on the Georgia Performance Standards. Days in the STEM Lab will focus on integrating technology and Robotics into our curriculum.

22. Field Trips • In school field trip – • The Big Canyon Balloon – January 14th • Cost – about $4.00 per student • Our big field trip is still in the planning stages. As soon as it is approved we will send permission slips and begin installment payments to help keep it affordable.
