COMPOST Compost is a type of fertilizer that is made from rotting plants. It is easy and cheap to make, as all it really requires is vegetable waste. The vegetable waste is broken down by bacteria (germs), and made into compost.
COMPOST PILE • A compost pile is a collection of organic material which is kept in a state of aerobic decomposition, encouraging the material to break down into an extremely rich soil product which can be used in gardening
MAKING A COMPOST PILE Location- • Choose a level area with good drainage as standing water will slow down the pile • If possible avoid direct sunlight and areas exposed to strong winds, which can dry and cool the pile • The location should be convenient and should have enough space for temporary storage of excess organic wastes
Size- • The ideal compost pile size should be in the range of 3' x 3' x 3' to 5' x 5' x 5' • Smaller piles can't generate the heat necessary for plant material to decompose. Larger piles are harder to manage and may not decompose uniformly
Layering When starting a compost pile the recommended practice is to layer the materials thinly and uniformly, Layer 1- The organic materials Layer 2 - Animal manures, fertilizers or starters Layer 3 - Top soil
THINGS TO PUT IN COMPOST PILES • Table scraps ( Bread crumbs) • Fruit and vegetable scraps • Eggshells • Leaves • Grass clippings • Garden plants • Lawn and garden weeds • Chicken manure • Coffee grounds • Straw • Tea leaves • Newspaper • Cardboard
