  2. Basic Facts about Cells • The human body is made up of more than 75 trillion cells! • Every square inch of your body has 19 million skill cells.

  3. Cell Cytoplasm • Cytoplasm is the “Cell Soup” that surrounds everything in the cell. • Cytoplasm is made up mostly of water • Cytoplasm holds all the organelles between the nucleus and cell membrane

  4. Cell Membrane • The cell membrane is the outer layer that protects the cell— “Cell Protector” • The Cell membrane has two layers-hydrophollic (water loving) and hydrophobic (water fearing) • The membrane controls the amount of food that enters and water and material that exits the cell

  5. The Mitochondria • The Mitochondria is the cell “powerhouse” • Mitochondria provides the cell with energy to move and separate food in different ways. • Mitochondria is double-membraned. It has two layers, the outside one is smooth and the inner one is rough. • Bean-shaped organelle

  6. The Vacuole • The cell vacuole is the “Cell’s Storage Bin” • The vacuoles stores food and nutrients and exports substances that are needed by the cell. • Cell vacuoles are usually balloon shaped and able to expand for cell nutrient storage.

  7. Ribosomes • The ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis • Ribosomes receive RNA and then add amino acids to the protein chain • Ribosomes have a large subunit and small subunit (shaped like an acorn)

  8. Lysosomes • Lysosomes contain powerful chemicals that break down molecules that are bad for the cell • Lysosomes recycle the worn-out cell parts. • Lysosomes are the “Cell’s Protective Recyclers”

  9. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) • Network of folded membranes— “The Cell Highway” • The ER is the cell’s transportation system • Helps make proteins and other substances that the cell needs

The Nucleus • The Nucleus is the cell’s “control center.” • Nucleus directs all of the activities that take place inside the cell. • The nucleus contains chromosomes which are the structures that carry DNA • The center of the nucleus is called the nucleolus which produces ribosomes for protein
