How It Began… • Hooker took over as Commander of the Army of the Potomac • Increased morale … “Fighting Joe Hooker!” • Hooker left sizable army at Fredericksburg to fight Lee • Other Union forces converged west • Cavalry went forward to Richmond
Meet at Chancellorsville • The Cavalry had failed • Hooker was left with no alerts of Lee’s movements • Troops in the wilderness at Chancellorsville
Strategy • 115,000 (Union) vs. 60,000 (Confederate) • Hooker thought Lee would retreat • Lee divided Army • One part to defend Fredericksburg • Another to deal with Hooker
Lee’s “Right Arm”…Gone! • “Stonewall” Jackson marched the bulk of the army west • Exposed the right flank of the Federals • Dangerous march • Routed the Federals while at camp • Jackson was accidently shot by one of his men • Jackson died 8 days later
