Radioactive Elements • Radioactive Elements- Unstable elements that naturally break down or decay and slowly convert to a more stable non-radioactive substance. • Example of Radioactive Elements: Uranium, Radium, Plutonium
Radioactive Decay • Radioactive Decay- The breaking down or release of particles from the nucleus, and energy in the form of heat and light! • This release of particles and energy is called Radiation
What happens during Radioactive Decay? • As it decays, the atoms of the unstable radioactive element will slowly CHANGE into atoms or a more stable non-radioactive element. • The changing of one element into another through radioactive decay is called: Transmutation
Half Life • Half-Life- the amount of time it takes for half of the atoms of a radioactive element to convert to atoms of a more stable non-radioactive element.
Carbon-14 25% remains Carbon-14 50% remains Carbon-14 175 atoms Carbon-14 250 atoms Half Life Examples *Carbon-14 has a half life of 5,700 years Carbon-14 100% remains Carbon-14 500 atoms Nitrogen 325 atoms After another 5,700 years After 5,700 years Nitrogen 250 atoms
More Half Life Examples Half-Life • Uranium ---- 4,500,000,000 years ----> Lead • Potassium---- 1,300,000,000 years ----> Argon • Carbon-14---- 5,700 years ----> Nitrogen What is the half-life of Strontium-90 according to this chart?
After Note Quiz • What is the definition of a half-life • If I have 100 grams of Carbon-14 and the half life is 5,700 years how many grams of Carbon-14 will I have after 11,400 years. • What is it called when one element becomes another element through radioactive decay. Get out a half sheet of paper and answer these questions, make sure to number them, put your name in the upper right hand corner. YOU MAY USE YOUR NOTES
