French Revolution Phases The revolution will pass through four phases, and they will not be as clearly defined/separated as the slides in the presentation. Think of the revolutions original goal – to address the power of the Monarchy, and establish a constitution. They will have to contend with many other issues, even after “getting what the wanted.” They re-invent themselves as they go along.

French Revolution: Phases Four Phases: National Assembly: 1789 – 1791 Legislative Assembly: 1791 – 1792 National Convention/Reign of Terror: 1792 – 1795 Directory: 1795 – 1799 After this, we see the consolidation of power in the hands of Napoleon.

French Revolution: Phases Phase Two: Legislative Assembly: 1791 – 1792 Event though there is a constitution, all is not peaceful in France Outside powers threaten invasion (Prussia/Austria) The King is suspected of allying with Austria and Prussia There are splits in the Legislative Assembly between those who are satisfied with the progress, and those who wish to push it further Some begin to call for a Republic to be formed..
French Revolution: Phases 1792: France now has a Constitutional Monarchy 1792: They declare war on Austria and Prussia 1792 (Sept.) A mob storms the royal palace – King & Queen are now virtual hostages 1792 (Sept) Monarchy is abolished by the new Legislative body, the National Convention. 1792 (Oct) France is declared a Republic 1792 – Government is now in the hands of radicals like Robespierre The Reign of Terror will follow

Convention/Reign of Terror “Committee of Public Safety” is in charge… France will now be fighting against itself, as well as outside forces Enemies of the state will begin to be executed… Robespierre will rise in Power, and eventually begin to dictate policy himself Robes. Will try to eliminate any power or presence of the church whatsoever – A “Republic of Virtue” Eventually, the radicals will eliminate each other
French Revolution: Phases Phase Four: 1795 – 1799: The Directory After the “dust settles”, France tries to put itself back together The Directory, the latest form of government, will be too complex to get anything accomplished Franc e still has to deal with enemies of the state who might want a King back in power By 1797 – Napoleon will come back to France to restore order By 1799 – Napoleon will be one of three “consuls” run France By 1804 – Napoleon will has establish himself as Emperor for life – and France loves it!!!
French Revolution: Phases We will assess the revolution during tomorrow's class and Friday, but there are some questions to consider: If you begin to seek change b/c you are dissatisfied with the Monarchy, why do you end up with an Emperor, and are you satisfied? What real changes occurred in the social structure, or the economic structure of France? What was the impact on the Rest of Europe as this occurred?
