The Painted Lady Mrs. Anderson’s First Grade Class This is the story of the Painted Lady Butterfly by Mrs. Anderson’s class.
Our class studied the Painted Lady butterflies. Here are some things we learned.
First, the butterfly lays hundreds of eggs at a time. Often the butterfly lays her eggs on the underneath side of the leaf.
There, it is protected from predators and rain, storms and strong winds. The eggs look like pearls and are almost transparent.
After 3 to 5 days the caterpillar hatches out of the egg. Its first meal is the egg case and then it begins to eat leaves.
Some of its favorite leaves come from Rose of Sharon, Hollyhocks and mallow plants. The caterpillar grows and grows.
It sheds its skin 4 to 5 times. This is called molting. The skin comes off, starting at the head.
The skin that comes off is an exoskeleton and the caterpillar eats it because it has a lot of nutrition that the caterpillar needs. The caterpillar stays in this stage for 12 to 18 days.
When the caterpillar is ready to make a chrysalis, it makes a silk button and hangs with its head down in the shape of a “J.” It stays in the pupa stage for 7 to 10 days. Then the Butterfly comes out of the chrysalis!
A red liquid called meconium comes out of the chrysalis. The butterfly will use its proboscis to drink nectar from the flowers.
The butterfly has to wait for its wings to harden. It takes about 2 hours. It flaps its wings to pump blood into them so they will be strong.
Then the Painted Lady flies away to start the life cycle all over again!
Thank You Thank you to the Radnor Educational Foundation and the Wayne PTO for funding a grant that brought Powerful Voices for Kids mentors to our school and helped us explore our digital voices. We learned the importance of practice, of doing our best, and of choosing the best image to tell the story of the Painted Lady. Images were taken by our teachers and from the book: ?????
