Fish Larvae PresentationBalistidae by Zulkifli Talib
Balistidae (Triggerfish) Brief Description • Inhabit warm coastal water of Atlantic Mediterranean and Indo Pacific • Brightly colored fish often marked by lines and spots • Moderate size carnivorous fish with a long snout, small mouth with powerful teeth • Most species are associated with rocky or coral reef • 12 Indo Pacific genera, approx. 30 species
A. • Specimens – Indonesia • Sampling Location – Natuna • Sampling Gear – Bongo Net • Stage – Preflexion • Sp. Name – Type 1
General Morphology • At hatching larvae are elongate and slightly compressed, post flexion larvae are deep • Initially rotund in the trunk but become laterally compressed during flexion • 18-19 myomeres • The head is moderate to large • The mouth s small and terminal • The large eye is round
Head Spination • The only head spination is a tuft of spinules on the preopercle • The tuft disappear in early flexion stage in cojunction with appearance of spinule-like scales on the head and body
Pigmentation • Heavy pigment on top of the head and nape and over the gut and operculum • A series of melanophore on the ventral midline midline of the tail that extend around the notochord tip to the dorsal • Pigment spreads rapidly following flexion
Similar Families • Before flexion and before formation of dorsal-fin spine maybe confused with priacanthids, monacanthids, triacanthids, triacanthodids and dactylopterids • Priacanthids – lack the preopercular tuft, higher myomere count (22) • Monacanthids – less rotund in head & trunk • Triacanthids & Triacanthodids lack the preopercular tuft • Dactylopterids – more myomere (21-22) even though body shped and pigmentation similar
