PWR and SCUPresentation Purpose and Outline • This presentation is about the 2009 Parliament of World’s Religions meeting in Melbourne, and how students, faculty and staff at Santa Clara University can get involved. • Four questions are addressed: • Why should/might I be interested in the Parliament? • How can I get involved? • When can I get involved • where can I get more information? • Heads up for Students: • The next information session is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7, 4:30 in the Campus Ministry Conference Room • Student application deadline is Monday, April 13, 5:00 p.m.

Over 11,000 people are expected in Melbourne.

SCU Delegation Part of Silicon Valley Network of Interfaith organizations www.southbayinterfaith.org Local/Glocalization Leading up to the parliament you will make connections to Silicon Valley organizations and congregations, many of whom have ties to centers and communities around the globe.

Glocalization Example SCU Delegation is linked to Silicon Valley Interfaith Group pursuing “partner city” affiliation with WPR. http://www.carrythevision.org/Site/default.htm What is value-added of interfaith to religion’s participation in civic life of a region? Will participation in PWR—the network and the 2009 Conference—affect interfaith networks here in Silicon Valley? Does the Valley have a global religious landscape that parallels its global economy?

Go there as part of the SCU Delegation • Students: complete and submit application • Available March 12, 2009 (www.scu.edu/XXXX • Due April 13 • Faculty and Staff • Contact Aimee Moiso (amoiso@scu.edu) or Philip Boo Riley (priley@scu.edu) Participate in pre/post trip campus and community activities • Help w/ grant writing and fundraising • Help with courses and events • TBD

Some Details (that are challenging) • Estimated Cost: $4,000 (all expenses, including airfare) • SCU delegation will explore options for fundraising • Parliament coincides with Fall Quarter 2009 last week of classes and exams • SCU administration will support students to make arrangements Time Line • Spring Quarter 2009: preliminary planning • Fall Quarter 2009: pre conference preparations • Winter Quarter 2010: post conference activity
