Current End-of-Life Curriculum: 1st Year Students • 1st Year: 6 hours of lectures, film and discussion using two Robert Wood Johnson Foundation projects: • WIT (the film) • Educating Physicians for End of Life Care (EPEC). • Ethical principles and care for the elderly and dying • The history and mission of Hospice and Palliative care

  3. Current End-of-Life Curriculum: 2nd Year Students • 1 hour lecture given by the local Hospice CEO about End-of-Life Care • The Hospice philosophy of comfort care • The history of Hospice • The Hospice team approach to patient care • How Hospice is funded • Spiritual issues at the end-of-life

  4. Goals for my End-of-Life Project • #1 Help inform the students at my school on • When to refer a patient to Hospice • The job description of a Hospice and Palliative Care Physician • How to become a Hospice and Palliative Care Physician • Some of the legal and ethical issues that Hospice and Palliative Care Physicians face. • #2 Have the students at my school get hands-on experience of Hospice and Palliative Care

  5. How to accomplish goal #1: Informing the students • Each week PCSOM has a one hour lecture called “Current Issues in Medicine” • I will have Kay Mueggenburg, the Vice President of Education, Research, & Community Integration at Hospice of the Bluegrass speak to our students about the afore mentioned topics during a CIM

  6. How to accomplish goal #2: Giving the students hands-on experience • 3rd year: Advocate for a rotation through Hospice and Palliative care • Require that the student shadows a Hospice or Palliative Care doctor for a week and writes a reflective paper on their experience • 4th year: Advocate for an elective in Hospice and Palliative Care. • Give students information about how to become a Hospice volunteer.

  7. Conclusions • PCSOM students need to be informed about the work of Hospice and Palliative Care physicians and how to go into those fields, which will be done through a CIM lecture. • PCSOM students also need to have hands-on experience in Hospice and Palliative Care which will occur via advocating for a rotation (3rd year) and an elective (4th year) in these fields.
