Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time • James and John’s Request • Blind Bartimaeus
Foretelling his death • Mark 8:31 • Mark 9:31 • Mark 10:34
Jesus fulfills what He said • “Behold we are going up to Jerusalem”- 11:1-13:37 • “The Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and scribes”- 14:1, 2, 43-53 • “They will condemn Him to death”- 14:55-65 • “And deliver Him to the Gentiles”- 15:1 • “They will mock Him, and spit on him, and kill Him”- 15:2-38 • “And the third day He will rise again”- 16:1-11
Foretelling his death • Mark 8:31 – Peter rebukes Jesus • Mark 9:31 – Who is the greatest? • Mark 10:34 – James and John request
Matthew 20:20-21 • Mother Salome was there asking Jesus • Salome believed to be Mary’s sister (Matt. 27:56; Mark 15:40; John 19:25)
“The Cup” • Joy (Psalm 23:5; 116:13) • Divined Judgment against human sin (Psalm 75:7-8; Isa. 51:17-23; Jer. 25:15-28; 49:12; 51:7; Ezek. 23:31-34; Hab. 2:16; Zech 12:2) • Baptism- being overwhelmed by suffering (Job 22:11; Ps. 69:2; Isa. 43:2)
James and John to suffer • James- Martyred under Herod (Acts 12:2) • John- endured many years of persecution and exile (John 21:20-23; Rev. 1:9)
Ransom • Greek Word:λύτρον • Transliteration:lytron- “price of release” “The reason for this different word that the Bible only states for this one even is because it refers to a payment to effect the release of slaves or captives from bondage.”
Blind Bart • Bartimaeus says, “Son of David” • 2 Samuel 7
It’s not faith that saves; Christ Saves • It’s not faith that heals: Christ Heals • It’s faith in Christ that saves and Heals
Faith Truth + Belief + Trust
What Came First? • Faith preceded Sight • The “Truth” had to be “Believed” and “Trusted”, and then you see
How Does Bart Respond? • Luke 18:43 • WORSHIP, WORSHIP, WORSHIP
Sin is like Blindness • We don’t see God clearly • We don’t see ourselves clearly • We don’t see others clearly
Conclusion • Jesus give us the focus – 32-34 • James and John are blinded by their sin- 35-45 • Jesus heals Bartimaeus and his reaction is to worship- 46-52
