Redesign of the Safety Syringe Jason Keiser, Jessica Chechak, Ty Weatherby BioE 1161 1/25/05
Why is a Safety Syringe Needed? • To prevent the reuse of the syringe on more than one individual. • To prevent damage to the needle before use. • To provide a more biohazard compatible device for disposal. • To prevent “needle-stick” injuries before and after use. • For home users such as diabetics. • These preventative measures may help to prevent the spread of AIDS and other blood-born diseases.
What Are We Doing? • Our project goal is to incorporate both of these features into one device. • Current safety syringes employ one of two features: • Retractable Needle • Retractable Needle Guard
Features Protective Needle Shield Push Button Retractable Needle
How It Works 3.) Retract Protective Shield 1.) Remove Cap 2.) Depress Push Button
4.) Depress Plunger Expelling the Medication 5.) Push down Plunger Until Click is Heard: Needle Retracts
6.) Replace Cap 7.) Discard
