DoR Fisheries Division – Establish an East Arnhem Indigenous Fisheries Network. Funds for positions and operational support in region. Assist licence acquisition. Project
Years of consultation with Manbuynga ga Rulyapa, ranger groups, traditional owners and Aboriginal organisations. DoR reprioritisation, approved funds to support Indigenous seafood related businesses. Improved coordination and resources to support Yolngu. Not directly related to Blue Mud Bay negotiations but seen as complementary. Background
Numerous requests to assist Aboriginal involvement in seafood related business. Unable to effectively assist all requests. Access to abundant seafood. Restricted due to lack of fishing industry and business skills as well as cost to enter and maintain a business. East Arnhem (3 x Wards only) was selected due to strong cultural linkages. Five Growth Towns, and numerous requests from the region over the years. Need
Traditional owners endorsed fisheries network to assist Yolngu to become involved in the seafood industry. Produce a 3 year strategic plan. Develop a coordinated approach to education and training in seafood and small business skills. Establish at least 3 Yolngu owned seafood businesses within 3 years. Increase supply of fresh seafood in the region. Better engagement of Yolngu in the management of aquatic resources. Objectives

Engage Miwatj Health under contract to assist consultation process. 2 ½ months into six month consultation process. DEEWR funding ‘feasibility’ consultancy for the network. Meetings with other support agencies. Now
Employ Indigenous Commercial Fishing Mentor. Determine training and skill development needs, work with DET and relevant RTO’s to develop plan. Application to DEEWR under IEP to support positions in any Yolngu owned corporation. Applications to IBA and ABA if/as required. Next
