Electronics and the environmentET4407 LED backlight LCD versus fluorescent backlight LCD
Outline • Introduction • SLCA for both LCD’s • Explanation of the SLCA • Target Plot • Conclusions
LED backlight LCD versus Fluorescent backlight LCD • Both LCD TV's are designed the same way. • The difference is the backlight. • LED backlight LCD T.V. uses light emitting diodes to display the image.
LED backlight LCD versus Fluorescent backlight LCD • While the Fluorescent LCD T.V. uses a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps i.e. CCFL • The aim is to analysis which is more environmentally friendly by the use of SLCA
SLCA • The SLCA consists of a 3x6 matrix • SLCA takes a look at both LCD TV’s under the headings of global warming potential, resource depletion and toxicity • With these headings our aim is to analysis them at the levels of resource extraction, manufacturing, transportation, product use, re-cycling and disposal.
Completed SLCA • 0=Terrible 1= Very Bad 2= Bad 3= Average 4= Good 5= Excellent
Explanation of the SLCA • First of all I will look at the TV’s under their global warming impacts. • Secondly, I will look at the TV’s under their resource depletion impacts. • Finally, I will look at the TV’s under their toxicity impacts.
Global Warming Impacts • For the LED backlight TV, the likes of arsenic and gallium have to be mined. • For the Fluorescent backlight LCD TV, mercury and phosphorus have to be mined • Mining has a serious impact on global warming, as seen in a previous presentation “what’s the problem”
Global Warming Impacts • As the LED are based on semiconductor technology, the manufacturing of them has a serious impact on global warming. • This is because semiconductor manufacturing uses high energy consumption. • While the manufacturing of the CCFL uses less energy and is cheaper. • The main worry for the CCFL is the mercury.
Global Warming Impacts • The transportation of both types of TV’s are the exact same. • Therefore have the same impact on global warming
Global Warming Impacts • In the case of product use, the LED backlight TV uses 40% less power consumption than the CCFL. • The LED can be switched on and off more quickly than the CCFL.
Global Warming Impacts • The end of life treatment of the LED is by far better than of the CCFL. • The LED can be re-cycled while the CCFL requires dedicated disposal because of the mercury and phosphorous. • Overall the LED backlight TV is much better on an global warming front.
Resource Depletion • The likes of arsenic and gallium will deplete after time like all resources. • But the likes of mercury is very rare.
Resource Depletion • The manufacturing of the LED backlight TV would use a lot of resources as the energy consumption is high
Resource Depletion • The transportation of the TV’s is N/A in this case. • This is because a typical Samsung LCD TV of both types are exactly the same packaging and transport cost.
Resource Depletion • The LED backlight TV uses lesser power so therefore is better than the fluorescent backlight TV. • Therefore there is less power consumption from the home.
Resource Depletion • Once again the LED can be re-cycled, while the CCFL would have to be disposed of in a landfill.
Toxicity • Both TV’s have harmful materials to mined. • The manufacturing of the LED requires more power so therefore would be more harmful. • The transportation of the two types of TV’s are the same • Because the CCFL have to disposed off and contain mercury they are dangerous when they come to the end of life. • On the other hand the LED can be fully recycled.
Conclusions • The SLCA score total was 50:24 in favour of the LED backlight LCD TV. • From the SLCA the LED LCD is a lot more environmentally friendly. • LED backlight LCD TV are the future. • There is progression in this area with the introduction of a sidelight LCD TV. • This type of TV contains LED around the edge of the screen which disperse the picture along the screen. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKVp9Q-Z220 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnsZvf3SJn4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1ZpUiBQiHE
