Core Software for CMSDavid Stickland for CMSOct 01, RRB The Core-Software and Computing was not part of the detector MoU The current requirement is for skilled “software professionals” Extensive discussion and consensus in Hoffmann Panel (2000) Urgent need for this manpower Presentation at April 01 RRB Many internal and external discussions in intervening period Request specific assistance of RRB now ~10 people in 2002 DPS/ CMS RRB-T 2001-116
What does CMS mean by “Software Professionals/ Engineers”? • For manpower accounting purposes, anyone designing or writing technical software that is part of the CT Tasks and Deliverables, is defined as a “Software Professional” • This means for example • Framework, toolkit, authors/maintainers • Release tool developers • Production tool developers • But not • Physics algorithm writers • Physics base program • People running productions • Now must be highly skilled, but a purpose of production SW professionals is to simplify this work • People preparing to build local facilities • Too complex for central organization, many possibilities (lab manpower, grid manpower..) Maintain focus on tasks that are difficult to man in traditional physics base-program’s Somewhat prejudicial against the many people doing this type of highly skilled work now. But intention is that these tasks will eventually not require SW professional skills DPS/ CMS RRB-T 2001-116
SW manpower hard to find Milestones under pressure and at risk IMoU proposed in April Currently disfavored – shelved Act Institute by Institute, Agency by Agency to enable their participation Two tracks being actively followed: Improve efficiency of manpower use: Strengthen Project Management Identify components that can be delegated away from CERN Focus scope Definition Emphasize collaborative efforts Common Solutions for common problems Delegate to and/or make use of GRID related projects wherever possible +10 Required in 2002 Software Manpower Overall Context: Physicist Users and Developers (PRS) 2000: ~20 2001: ~80 DPS/ CMS RRB-T 2001-116
GRID Tools and Infrastructure will Increase efficiency of computing use Minimize costs! And enable full worldwide physics collaboration A Primary goal of the experiment SW Project But the experiment must be very active in establishing and testing GRID deliverables now Increasing the current manpower stress Most of the SW Professionals in our WBS are not directly GRID related Most of the LCGP Manpower is not directed at the internal experiment software challenges GRID and LHC Computing Grid Project(s) DPS/ CMS RRB-T 2001-116
Needed 2003 (11) Needed 2002 (10) CURRENT DPS/ CMS RRB-T 2001-116 Current numbers in AFT are over-estimates (fractional people, not all focused on urgent needs)
CERN counting includes 50% of each Project Associate India recently proposed two new engineers for online software ! DPS/ CMS RRB-T 2001-116
Summary • Manpower problems of Experiment Core-Software remain critical • Can hope for some amelioration by LCGP • Are being further stretched by required GRID work now • In most items of Core-Software, SW Professionals are required • Very difficult for many Institutes to provide without special assistance • No pro-rata IMoU • Therefore must build Core-Software manpower one by one • ~10 additional people in each of 2003 and 2004 • Please help your Institutes respond to these challenges • One (or more!) new Software Professional(s) from each country in 2002 would significantly improve our ability to be ready for LHC and to meet today's needs DPS/ CMS RRB-T 2001-116
CMS Core-Software. (One-Page Summary!) • Manpower problems of CMS Core-Software remain critical. (internal reviews, LHCC..) • LHC Computing Grid Project may help • But most of our WBS items are NOT Grid • But existing manpower being further stretched by required GRID work now! • SW Professionals: • Frameworks, toolkits, Release tools, Production tools, Quality control.. • But not (as already in other base programs) • Physics algorithm writers • People running productions • People building local facilities • CMS decided against a pro-rata IMoU • Build Core-Software manpower one by one • ~10 additional people in 2003 and in 2004 • Please help your Institutes respond to these challenges • Engineers typically not in existing Physics base-program; Institutes may need help to hire/dedicate this type of resource +10 Required in 2002 +10 more in 2003 India recently proposed two new engineers for online software ! UK 1-3 gridpp people possible (count 50% for CMS?) DPS/ CMS RRB-T 2001-116
