What is Epidermolysis Bullosa ? .Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare skin disease that can affect babies and adults over fifty. . The 3 main types of EB are: Epidermolysis bullosa Simplex Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa Dystrophic Epidermolysis bullosa . Definition- A group of inherited disorders in which skin blisters develop in response to minor injury
Disease Chart 10%
Inheritance If a parent has “autosomal dominant inheritance” they could take a 50/50 chance and pass it on to their child. But “a child who does not inherit the gene for EB from an affected parent will not have the condition and cannot pass it on”. If a parent has “autosomal recessive” and each parent gives off a recessive gene for the disorder “the two genes will be paired together causing the disorder to be expressed to the child.
Causes The disease is caused by “mutation in the genes that dictate the way your body produces its skin”.
Symptoms . EB Simplex- The common symptom for this type is skin fragility to the hands and feet. Also blistering can occur anywhere on the body where the skin is subjected to friction like under wristbands and bra straps. . Junctional EB- The problems this disease comes with is skin ulcers and dental issues. . Dystrophic EB- Fragility of the digestive tract. They could have a problem eating due to the blisters in your mouth. Skin cancer could later occur.
Treatments Right now there is no cure for EB but research is still going on You could go study gene therapy with a doctor and they could help treat your disease Creams, lotions, typical antibiotics, and bleach baths could treat this disease
Genetic Counseling • If you and your family would like to, you can attend a genetic counseling class. Genetic Counseling is when you go and talk to a therapist about nature, inheritance and implications of a disorder
