Math Vocabulary Terms
Period In a number, a group of three digits, separated by commas, starting from the right. 237, 156, 329 ONES PERIOD MILLIONS PERIOD THOUSANDS PERIOD
Addends and Sum Any numbers that are added together are called addends. The answer of an addition number sentence is a sum. 16 +12 = 28 ADDENDS SUM
Equation A number sentence that contains an equal sign. An equation shows an equal relationship between two or more mathematical expressions. 16 +14=30 16+14=10X3
Associative Property of Addition Addends can be regrouped and the sum remains the same. (13 +7)+5 = 13+(7+5) 20+5=25 13+12=25
Identity Property of Addition The sum of any number and zero is that number. 26+0=26 87+0=87 0+345,172=345,172
Commutative Property of Addition Numbers can be added in any order and the sum remains the same. 32+15=15+32 47=47
Inverse Operations Two operations that undo each other. Addition and subtraction are inverse operations. Multiplication and division are inverse operations. 45+10=55 SO 55-10=45 OR 55-45=10 50 /10=5 SO 10X5=50 OR 5X10=50
Factors The numbers multiplied together to find a product. Example: 3 and 6 are factors of 18
Array A way of displaying objects in rows and columns 2 rows by 3 columns = 8 2X3=8 3 rows by 4 columns = 12 3X4=12
Multiple (s) The product of any two whole numbers. Multiples are all the products for a given number. For example, some multiples of 4 are 16, 24, 4, 8, 40, and 12 since all these numbers are in the “4 times table”.
Product The answer to a multiplication problem. 6X8=48 PRODUCT FACTORS
Identity Property of Multiplication The product of any number and one is that number. 12X1=12; 3X1=3; 55X1=55
Commutative Property of Multiplication Numbers can be multiplied in any order and the product remains the same. 23X4=4X23
Distributive Property Breaking apart problems into two simpler problems. Example: (3X 21)= (3 X 20)+ (3X1). The 21 has been distributed
Zero Property of Multiplication The product of any number and zero is zero. 3X0=0; 15X0=0; 0X12=0; (3+4)X0=0
Dividend The number to be divided. Example: 32 ÷ 4 = 8 dividend
Divisor The number by which another number is divided. Example: 32÷ 4= 8 divisor
Quotient The number that results from the division of one number by another. Example: 32 ÷ 4 = 8 quotient
