Formula A way of expressing a relationship between quantities The quantities in a formula are represented by variables.
Variables in formulas • The symbol for a variable is often the first letter of the quantity it represents. • A letter variable can have different meanings depending on whether it is a capital or lowercase letter.
Evaluating a Formula Find the value of one variable in the formula when the values of the other variables are given.
How to Evaluate a Formula • Write the formula on the first line. • Substitute numerical values for all variables that are known or given on the second line. • Carry out any computations to find the value of the one remaining variable on the following lines. Follow the order of operations.
