English Language Arts Curriculum • Pearson’s Reading Street Program • Reading comprehension at appropriate Lexile level • Vocabulary • Fluency • Words Their Way • Write From the Beginning
Words Their Way • Using Words Their Way, students develop knowledge of English spelling and learn how to examine words through active exploration using a hands-on manipulative approach. • Students also learn the regularities, patterns, and conventions of English orthography needed to read and spell. • Students also increase their knowledge about words while studying not only the spelling but meanings of words based on their spellings.
Reading Expectation • Students are required to read every night. 20-30 minutes a night is recommended at the 5th grade level, to complete 30-40 minutes a day. • Homework is always to READ!
English Language Arts Curriculum Aligned to the Common Core
Accelerated Reading • Accelerated Reader will begin in September • Goals will be set per student • Scores will be taken and entered into the Gradebook as an AR Score • Tests will be taken weekly at school during our scheduled library time or in class when available
LA Classroom Centers • Some activities we will be doing in centers are: • Word Sorts for Words Their Way • Guided Reading • Grammar • Semantics • Reading Skills- ie Character and Plot • Writing- Explanatory and Argumentative • Novel Studies • Independent Reading

Math Curriculum Aligned to the Common Core Students will use 8 mathematical principles - • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Homework • Assigned upon completion of lesson. (Disclaimer: Some lessons take 2-3 days to complete. Please check student agenda or my website for verification.) • Should not take more than 30-45 minutes to complete.
Math Test • Students are given a study guide for each test If the study guide is completed on-time, students are able to participate in our review. • Tests are 60% of a student’s overall grade.
Test Retakes If a student scores 69% or below, a retake can be requested.
