Other Forms • The Verse Paragraph • For very long poems, written almost like prose. These were commonly used to tell myths and stories throughout history, before writing. Beowulf, Epic of Gilgamesh. Some combinations of stanzas are popular forms with their own names. • Sonnets (14 lines) • Sonnets contain an octave, followed by a sestet, though sometimes this can change. • Free verse • Allows poets to write in whatever form they desire, without any rules. Poets generally create their own structure. • Villanelle (19 lines) • 5 tercets followed by a quatrain. No poem is easily grasped; so why should any reader expect fast results? – John Barton
Rhyme Poetry often features rhyming lines. Lines rhyme when the last sound is the same Rhymes are analyzed with what is called Rhyme Scheme The rhyme scheme is noted by using a letter to represent the sounds at the end of lines. It is possibleFor to turn so oft,To bring that lowest which was most aloft,And to fall highest yet to light soft:It is possible. The quintain at left has an ABBBA rhyme scheme. What is love? 'tis not hereafter; Present mirth hath present laughterWhat's to come is still unsureIn delay there lies no plentyThen come kiss me, Sweet and twenty, Youth's a stuff will not endure. The sestet (in this case a couplet+quatrain) uses an AABCCB rhyme scheme. When a poem does not have any clear rhyme scheme, it is Blank Verse.
Meter Poetry frequently creates a rhythm by using Word Stress. Poets arrange words in such a way that the stressed syllables appear at regular intervals. Words in English have stress. This means we say one syllable more strongly than another. Consider an example of Iambic Pentameter Shakespeare frequently used this. Iambic means that the rhythm is unstressed->stressed, and penta means 5. Rhythm can still be created based on the number of syllables, the speed at which they are read, or via the choice of words.
