How did you know what words could have gone in the blank? • In determining the appropriate word to use in the blank, you probably examined the other words in the sentence for clues. • Although was a clue that Lilly shouldn’t have been late for class unless she had a good reason. • Tardiness is something you need to explain to those you keep waiting.
What are these “clues” called? • Context Clues! • What does context mean? • Context is the way in which a word is used. • Many words have more than one meaning. • Ex: Do you have any spare change? Change= money • OR It is time to change classes. Change= switch What makes the word “change”different in these two sentences? The context, or the way the words are used. So….
When you use context clues, you determine the meaning of a word based on how it is used. • Let’s have a little fun with some jibberish words. See if you can figure out the meaning based on how the word is used.
