  1. How?? How to protect a stream for under $400! By: Grace Ignatova and Mia Howerton We’ll show you!

  2. Background • 8 sports fields at MICDS • Stream by the Mac • 125 m. long • Pesticides (insecticides & herbicides) • This creates polluted runoff • Buffer strip will solve this problem

  3. wind

  4. Dangerous effects • Fish can become ill • Oceans can become polluted • Drinking water can become contaminated

  5. Research that went farther than the internet… • Contacted the MICDS Ground Maintenance I need to know specifically what chemicals and pesticides are used on the sports fields at school. Could you please help me by telling me what kinds of pesticides being are used on the fields? This is really going to help me write my proposal. Thank you so much! -Mia Howerton

  6. Herbicides • Scythe, Confront, Battleship, & Round-up

  7. Insecticides • Merit, Isotox, & Malathion

  8. Benefits of buffer strip • Preventing erosion • Improving soil quality • Filter water • Create a sustainable environment at MICDS Hehe… Green thumb #pun_intended

  9. Proven Statistics Benefits of buffer strip: • Block up to 50% or more of pesticides • 60% or more of certain pathogens blocked • 75% or more of sediment kept from eroding (National Research Conservation Service)

  10. Research that went farther than the internet… • Contacted Missouri Botanical Garden

  11. Trees needed • Viburnum Prunifolium (Smooth Blackhaw) • Ilex Decidua (Possumhaw Holly)

  12. Shrubs • AlnusSerrulata (Smooth Alder) • CeanothusHerbaceus (Prairie Redroot)

  13. Details • 60 ft. on side facing fields • 20 ft. on opposite side • Allows for maximum protection • Natural buffer strip

  14. Costs • Possumhaw Holly • $16.00 a tree • Smooth Blackhaw • $8.00 a tree • Both types of shrubs cost the same ($4.75) • Smooth Alder • Prairie Redroot • 12 of each shrub= $114 • 10 of each tree = $240 • The total cost= $354 

  15. In Conclusion… • The MICDS is very well kept and pretty • Problem of runoff • A buffer Strip will block these harmful chemicals and will create a more sustainable environment • Total cost= $340

  16. Thank you!
