Stage 4: Editing • Editing is proofreading. It is correcting mechanical errors. • Requires word-by-word reading & attention to writing conventions: spelling, capitalization, punctuation, paragraph formation, etc. • Wait a couple of days after revising before editing.
Stage 4: Editing • Explain the differences between regular reading & proofreading. • Teach proofreading marks. • Focus on particular categories of errors. Teach 5-10 min. mini-lessons.

Stage 4: Editing • Provide editing checklists to help locate & correct mechanical errors. • Correct errors listed on editing sheet.
Stage 4: Editing Model editing using your revised draft. • Post the revised draft & editing checklist. • Take suggestions for editing revised draft or use the shared pen technique.
Stage 4: Editing • Model peer editing: Writer makes corrections on his/her own paper while peer editor makes suggestions. • Provide time for editing conferences with teacher. Student (not Teacher) makes final editing changes.
