Matthew 5:13-16 13Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. 14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. 15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

The Reality of Influence • It is undeniable that influence exists • In material world, advertising attempts to influence our opinions on various topics • In family life, the influence of parents and spouses is obvious whether good or bad • In religious matters, our example & teaching is intended to bring others to righteousness • Let’s examine spiritual influence in our lives

Evil Influence in Families • 1 Kings 11:4- Idolatrous wives on Solomon • 1 Kings 21:25- Jezebel on Ahab • 1 Kings 22:52f- Ahab on Ahaziah of Israel • 2 Chron. 21:6- Ahab’s daughter on Jehoram • Also on son, Ahaziah of Judah (2 Chron. 22:3) • In search for mate, consider spiritual impact • As parents, our actions & words influence the thoughts, values & decisions of our children

Evil Influence in Life &Teaching • Jeremiah 23:13f- Prophets on people • Mark 15:11- Leaders on people • Contrast with people’s reaction at entry to city • 1 Cor. 5:6f- Immorality on congregation • 1 Cor. 15:33- Error on lives of others • Consider influence of evil on our society • When evil is not purged from presence of good, it has devastating results on church

  8. Good Influence Commended • Congregations may have influence for good & are commended for such • 1 Thess. 1:8- sounded forth the word • Individuals may have influence for good & are to be honored for such • Hebrews 13:7- “imitate their faith” • Bible notes specific influences for good

  9. Good Influences Specified • Example of Jesus is preeminent • Hebrews 12:1-3 • Philippians 2:5-11 • 1 Cor. 11:1- Influence of Paul • Commanded same (1 Timothy 4:12) • Hebrews 11:4f- Dead yet still speaking • All of our lives have been enriched by influences for good

  10. What Is Effect of My Influence? • On my family? • On my friends and neighbors? • On my fellow-workers & classmates? • Where am I leading people by my life & teaching? Closer to or further from God? • If I were to die today, what would my life “yet speak” after I am gone?
