  1. P2 Radiation & Life Lesson 5: Microwaves

  2. Objectives • MUSTunderstand that the heating effect of radiation can damage cells • SHOULD understand how microwaves can be useful but why some people have concerns • COULD evaluate how scientists investigate factors that may be causing an effect and understand how risks may be assessed

  3. Key Words • You need to be able to define the following: • Absorb • Microwave • Sample • Bias

  4. Textbook Answers 1) Radiation is absorbed and heats the cell till it is damaged or killed. 2) Time of exposure; intensity of radiation. 3) To avoid people being exposed to more radiation than necessary. 4) How many calls you make a day; how many years you use the phone for; whether you text or call; the strength of the signal. 5) No clear evidence has emerged of a change in risk, over many years of studying large samples of people who use mobile phones; the level of microwave radiation at the base of masts is tiny. 6) Either yes, with a good reason – e.g. young children’s cells are more susceptible to damage or no, with a good reason – e.g. the risk is very low and the benefits for the community may be very great.
