  1. Sunday Sermon Substitutionary Atonement: How the Death of Illegal Participation Saves us From Our Mistakes

  2. Substitute • 2-27-9 Replaces a player or fills a vacancy

  3. Metamorphosis Becomes a player when he: • communicates • enters the huddle • Takes a position or • Participates in the play

  4. The Death of Illegal Participation Coach you’ve got to learn the rules There is no illegal participation…it’s all illegal substitution ~ read your rulebook!!! Rules

  5. Substitutes As usual, negative restrictions • Do not enter field while ball in play • 12th player do not leave while ball in play • Must enter from team area • Must depart to team area by sideline only

  6. Substitutes • Do not dawdle • Do not leave until a play occurs • Offense, do not rush to the line after substitution • Cannot break huddle with 11 players or more

  7. Mechanics • Team A huddles and sends in subs and does not rush to line • Nothing required

  8. Mechanics No Huddle & subs or subs AFTER huddle: R goes to “t” ( help from others) U to ball until cleared by R

  9. Penalty • Entering during play – live ball- 5 yds. • 12th player leaves during play –live ball- 5 yds • 12 players during play – live ball- 5yds • Break huddle with 12 – dead ball -5yds • Failure to leave timely – dead ball – 5yds • 12 defenders –snap imminent –dead ball 5yds

  10. Busting 5 • 2nd time and more for rushing to line when in substitution process • 15 yards Rule 3-5-2-e

  11. 10 seconds • 2nd & 4th quarter must be like 1st and 3rd • Run-off 10 seconds when a dead ball event causes clock to stop
