Data use in special schools/PRUs – defining what we do well and using it to improve • Woodfield Hub Meeting • 15 May 2014 • Penny Barratt and Andre Bailey
Data in special schools and PRUs: the ongoing issue • Data management systems used in mainstream schools are not relevant for schools/PRUs • No national guidelines and no standardised approach – all special schools/PRUs have different ways of managing the data • Special schools/PRUs are not using data to its full potential in terms of improving and informing practice • A standardised approach is needed for schools to use data to inform and improve their practice and deliver better outcomes for pupils.
What we want to produce • A report which recognises and recommends best practice to define: • what data should be collected and why • how data should be recorded, presented and analysed (including triangulation techniques) • how should data ultimately be used in order to inform teacher practice. • By doing this, we hope to: • learn from each other • increase your knowledge and give you the confidence to use data effectively • enable you to inform and improve data management and practice in the classroom
Where you come in • Share how you manage data in your school • Fill in a short online survey – you will be emailed the link • Provide your assessment policy and some sample data to rachel.corcoran@challengepartners.org • By Friday 23rd May …we will do the rest!
What we do with your input Potential to also gather information from schools outside of CP
Any questions? • How will we manage your data? • Data security is very important • No named school data in the actual report; only best practice and case studies • Any data which is shown will be anonymised • What happens to the report? • It will be distributed to CP schools for you to use as you wish • It will be put on the CP website • Shared with the DfE • What kind of data sample should be provided? • Information on the data that you collect • Data sets that are used internally to inform practice • Data that is presented to governors • Data that would be presented for a CP review or OFSTED
