  3. Thesis • Go back to your SS log and look at what you stated you were trying to prove. • Must be written in third person • Must be provable • Can be based on three subtopics • Must match the research you have gathered

  4. Sample thesis • Arthur Miller’s The Crucible depicting the Salem witch trials of the 1600s was inspired by the Red Scare, a hunt for communists in the United States in the 1950’s.

  5. Not a thesis Arthur Miller’s The Crucible was written in the 1950’s during the time of The Red Scare. Why? You are proving nothing!!! It is a fact.

  6. II. Arthur Miller • A. Early years • 1. Born in 1915 to a New York upper middle class family • a. Family struggled in the 1930s when his father was hit by the Great Depression • b. Miller worked in a warehouse to save his own tuition money for college • 2. Early Writings • a. Won many awards for plays in college • b. His first Broadway hit, All My Sons (1947)

  7. Miller continued • B. Dramatic years • 1. Miller questioned by congressional committee on his involvement with communists a. He refused to implicate others b. Charged with contempt of Congress which was later overturned 2. Inspired him to write The Crucible a. Warn against mass hysteria b. Plead for freedom and tolerance C. Sadly, the hysteria over potential communists lasted for years in America.
