  2. What Is Biology • Biology is the study of life • Biology explores life from the global to the microscopic. • All of life as we know it is found within the biosphere (planet earth) • The biosphere contains all ecosystems (the living and non-living components of all systems of the biosphere)

  3. What Do We Study In Biology? • In biology students study the following topics • Cells that all living things are made of • DNA / Genes which are molecules inside cells that carry the code of life • Humans, genetics and society • Stem cells, cloning, GMO’s, current technology, genetic disorders, mutations • History of Life and how it continues to change as the planet changes • Ecology / Conservation

  5. Science As Inquiry • Science is a Latin verb meaning “to know” • Science is a way to answer questions about the natural world • At the heart of science is inquiry – that is to answer questions about what people observe in nature and actively seek answers

Classifying Life • Scientists group life into three domains • Domains of Life • Archaea • Bacteria • Eukarya(living things made of cells with a nucleus) • Kingdom Protista(amoeba, algae, paramecium, euglena) • Kingdom Fungia(yeast, mushrooms, molds) ~ decomposers • Kingdom Plantae(plants) • Kingdom Animalia(animals) Consist of prokaryotic single cells
