Culture Meaning of the culture and arts. The word culture is comes from the Latinwordculturaand its meaning is to “cultivate".Culture and the arts are integral parts of peoples lives. They enrich our mind and please our senses. Cultural events are an interesting way of spending people´s free time because we can broden our cultural horizons. What is culture represented by? Culture life is represented by fine arts, arts exhibitions as well as going to the concerts, theatre or cinema.
What does cultural life depend on? How rich your cultural life is depends on both your interests and hobbies, as well as where you live.
Cinema • Going to the cinema generally enjoys great popularity. In Slovakia most films are of American productions, but the favorite ones are also the Czech and Slovak films. Films are usually shown with Slovak subtitles or they are dubbed.Films are shown on a screen. • The person who makes the film is a directorand the people acting in films areactors or actresses. The lead actor is an actor who has a major role in the movie. Other actors appearing in the movie are called a cast. Famous actors are often called film stars. People who performs difficult actions instead of actors are called stuntmen.
Music - Listening to music belongs to one of the most popular kinds of arts among young people. - Young people are surrounded by music all the time. They love listening to it in different situations. - Small children take music lessons at music schools and learn to play a musical instrument like the guitar, piano, pipe. - Teenagers can set up their own amateur band. People listen to music at work, home, in cars and also in shops. There are many kinds of music: country, classical, popular, jazz, and folk. Young people are keen on going to live concerts held in stadiums, or in open air.
Museums and galleries Those who like fine arts enjoy going to art galleries to see exhibition of classical or modern art. In art galleries people admire paintings such as landscapes, portraits, drawings or sculptures of famous painters and sculptors like Picasso, Van Gogh, Claude Monnet, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and others. The most famous galleries in the world are e.g. in France - Louvre, in London - The National Gallery, in New York - Modern Arts Gallery, in Slovakia – the Slovak National Gallery. In museums we learn about the history of our region or country and look at the exhibits showing us what the lives of our forefathers were like.
