Laptops in the classroom • Many universities are requiring students to purchase laptops • Free wireless internet access is very common on university and community college campuses • Professors report that since last year the number of students using laptops in class has risen significantly
Are they really taking notes? • Faculty are beginning to notice that students are more interested in shopping online and instant messaging than engaging in class • Some universities are now blocking internet access to classrooms, or not allowing students to have laptops in class
Selective internet • Bentley College (among others) have installed switches in classroom to turn off or allow internet functions: e-mail, internet, campus webpages • Last month, University of Chicago Law school banned laptops from classrooms (with protest from the students)
Two sides to the story... • Some faculty argue that the internet and laptops are too distracting for the classroom, and cause people to not pay attention • Some faculty and students argue that if lectures were more engaging and interesting this wouldn’t be a problem
The argument continues • http://chronicle.com/free/v52/i39/39a02701.htm • http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2008/04/18/laptops
