Let’s try it this way. • The average (or mean) of data is computed by • 1. Adding all the data together (sum). • 2. Dividing that sum by the number of data. • 5 + 10 + 2 + 7 = 24 • 24 ÷ 4 = 6 • So the average number of rocks collected was 6.
Here’s another example. • 3 + 2 + 10 + 6 + 4 =25 • 25 ÷ 5 = 5 • So the average number of fish owned by members of the Aqua club was 5.
You can find the average of your test grades. • 90 + 85 + 82 + 100 + 100 + 86 = 543 • 543 ÷ 6 = 90.5 • So the average of Sam’s spelling grades is 90.5 which is rounded up to 91 which is an A.
