  1. Types of Innovation [Source: H Brezet, ‘Dynamics in ecodesign practice’. UNEP Industry and Environment 1997,20(1-2), 21-24.]

  2. Types 1 & 2 • Product improvement • The improvement of existing products with regards to pollution prevention and environmental care. • Product redesign • The product concept stays the same, but parts of the product are developed further or replaced by others.

  3. Types 3 & 4 • Function innovation • Involves changing the way the function is fulfilled eg a move from answering machines to voice mail. • System innovation • New products and services requiring changes in the related infrastructure and organisations.

  4. Types of Innovation • Factor 20 cannot be achieved solely through redesigning existing products or from producing a similar output in a different way. • This level of environmental improvement will be determined by a systems focus alone. • Only as a result of questioning the real impacts of what we do today can significant improvements occur. • Function & System Innovation presents interesting challenges to all sectors • This is yet to be addressed in any significant way by any sector • Current ecodesign tends to be focussed around product improvement and product redesign
