  1. MUTUAL MINISTRY REVIEW IN THE DIOCESE OF ALABAMA

  2. When we think about Mutual Ministry Review we often think of:

  3. Being under a magnifying glass

  4. With every step under scrutiny

  5. And painful attention to every detail

  6. Mutual ministry review is often experienced as:

  7. The Inquisition

  8. Tribunal

  9. A Vote

  10. We’d like the balloting to go like this:

  11. But it sometimes goes like this:

  12. It makes us feel like we’re being:

  13. We’d rather be at the:

  14. Clergy feel parishioners have suddenly turned into someone else

  15. People They’ve Never Seen Before

  16. Our Parishioners?

  17. And parishioners feel their clergy are behaving like such

  18. MUTUAL MINISTRY REVIEW It can make us mad!

  19. In a “scientific” poll among clergy ranking 20 areas of ministry in terms of personal enjoyment & satisfaction Mutual Ministry Review ranked next to last Just a tad better than completing the parochial report and a tad worse than attending diocesan convention

  20. THEOLOGICAL BASIS • Observing and bearing witness to the activity of God and giving account of our actions: - Luke 10:1-12 The seventy sent to heal and proclaim the Kingdom of God and return - Matthew 25:14-31 Parable of the talents - I Corinthians 12:4-14 Church as a body with many parts and a variety of gifts. - Shared responsibility.

  21. We believe that MMR should be a healthy experience in the body of Christ • Speaking the truth • Speaking the truth in love • Speaking the truth in love for the building up of the body • Establishing realistic expectations

  22. We now want to enter into a MUTUAL MINISTRY REVIEW that: 1. Provides an outline for conversation between the vestry and the rector at given times during the tenure of the rector as well as annual conversations between the rector and wardens. 2. Provides a framework for discussion by the vestry about how it is functioning.

  23. WHEN SHOULD A MMR TAKE PLACE: • A MMR should take place during the first 12 months after a rector/curate has been called. (Search Consultant assists) • A MMR should take place around the 2 to 5 year mark for a rector/curate and every 3 years thereafter as well as about two years before retirement. • A modified MMR should take place every year between rector and wardens.

  24. KMUTUAL MINISTRY REVIEW RECOMMENDATION • Use a third party facilitator. • If there is conflict between clergy person, vestry or parishioners, the time is NOT right for the Mutual Ministry Review.

  25. MUTUALMINISTRYREVIEW • For any MMR, should you use a consultant? - ALWAYSUSE ONE!! - WHY??

  26. SO, WHAT ABOUT THE OUTLINE FOR A MUTUAL MINISTRY REVIEW AT ST. PAUL’S - COLUMBUS?

  27. WHAT WERE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU SPOKE ABOUT TWO YEAR’S AGO WHEN YOU WERE SEEKING A NEW RECTOR and WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID TO EACH OTHER AFTER BEING TOGETHER FOR TWO YEARS?

  28. ST. PAUL’S - COLUMBUS • KEY QUESTIONS ASKED BY THE PARISH DURING THE CALLING PROCESS….. • What are the greatest challenges facing St. Paul’s? • What are the reasons you attend St. Paul’s?

  29. What should be the role of the new rector at St. Paul’s - Columbus? • To study, teach and preach the Scriptures. • To be responsible for meeting the spiritual needs of all members. • To lead worship. • To model a healthy, whole and holy life • To visit the sick. • To organize all facets of church life. • To plan and develop new programs.

  30. What are the most important characteristics of a rector? • To have sincerity/integrity. • To be godly. • To have strong leadership skills. • To be dynamic, energetic. • To have a sense of humor. • To be a good preacher. • To be down to earth, practical.

  31. What are some things you need to say to each other now? • You are now asked to speak honestly about what has been the greatest surprise you have experienced from your rector/vestry during the past year. • In light of the Parish Profile from two years ago, please speak honestly about the expectations for your rector/vestry that have not been achieved during the past year?

  32. Additional issues to be addressed in honest conversation……. • How does your vestry now work together in addressing the identified challenges facing your parish? • As rector, what additional resources do you feel you need to meet the needs of the parish? • What one additional thing would you like to say to your rector/to the vestry?

  33. Now, here is one last question for everyone to discuss? • It appears that your parish is on the verge of moving from a Pastoral sized parish to that of a Program sized parish with membership at 635, Average Attendance over 200 and budget over $400,000. • What might that mean to how vestry and rector work together and expectations/roles are lived out?

  34. PROGRAM CHURCH150 TO 350 Average Attendance • NO LONGER POSSIBLE FOR CENTRAL LEADERSHIP TO MAINTAIN PASTORAL CONTACT WITH ENTIRE PARISH. • TEAM LEADERSHIP REPLACES CENTRALIZED LEADERSHIP. • NUMBER OF PROGRAMS AND PROGRAM LEADERS GROW.

  35. PROGRAM CHURCH continued • NEW MEMBERS DRAWN BY VISIBILITY AND QUALITY OF PROGRAM AND MINISTRIES. • ROLE OF PRIEST SEEN AS COORDINATOR AND FORMULATOR OF DREAMS. • From Model of Arlin Rothauge
