Your NAB Unit Assessment is a compulsory module of the Higher PE Course. It is VITAL that you complete and pass this part of the course, as you cannot gain an overall pass without it. The NAB has 10 Questions and 4 Learning Outcomes The NAB is totalled out of 54 marks You need to get a minimum of 32/54 to pass The NAB is completed in class, under exam conditions You will be given one period to prepare each question and one period to write each question
Question 1: Describe the methods you used to collect data on your performance. Explain why these methods were appropriate. (6 marks) The Key to answering this question is making sure that you DON’T write about the information you collected, but you DO write about how you collected information Planning Your Answer Let’s look at the structure of your answer and how to go about planning it.. Split the question into two parts: DESCRIBE - What exactly did you do in each method (4 marks) EXPLAIN - Why you used these methods (2 marks)
DESCRIBE Describe the methods you used to collect data: - INITIAL DATA (Knowledge of Results, Stroke Analysis, Movement Analysis) - SPECIFIC DATA (Model Performer Checklist, Scatter Diagram) EXPLAIN Why did you use these methods. Remember the Key Words: - VALID - RELIABLE - ACCURATE - STRAIGHT FORWARD TO INTERPRET - OBJECTIVE (FACT)
Example of Starting Off your answer “In order to collect information on my performance in Badminton, I used a number of different Data Collection methods. Firstly, I wanted to collect general/initial information on my whole performance, so the first method I used was a Knowledge of Results. When using this method, I....... (describe). Question 2: As a result of analysing your data, give a detailed explanation of your: (a) Strengths and Weaknesses (b) Development Needs (6 marks) The Key to answering this question is making sure that you DOwrite about the information you collected, but you DON’T write about how you collected information * Be methodical with your answer * Be structured with your answer * Always use the word “because” e.g. My Overhead Clear was a strength because........ * Make reference to the methods you used to collect data. E.g. “From my Stroke Analysis Checklist, it showed that....
Part (a) An Explanation of your Strengths for two marks (give at least three strengths) An explanation of your Weaknesses for two marks (give at least three weaknesses) This comes from the data you have collected using the general data methods (Movement Checklist, Stroke Analysis, Knowledge of results) Part (b) An explanation of your Development Needs for two marks (what your chosen skill is, why it’s weak, which parts of it?) This comes from the data you have collected using the Specific Data methods (Scatter Diagram and Model Performer Checklist)
“From using a Knowledge of Results method to collect data, I was able to see that one of my Strengths in the game of Badminton was that I was staying close to my opponent’s. This was because every match that I played, I was within three points of my opponent. Another strength was shown from my Stroke Analysis Checklist. This showed that my Smash was a strength because it was powerful and fast enough to put my opponent under pressure and force them into playing a weaker shot in return, or make an error.
