  5. An ounce of prevention A. Pray for the parents. B. Communicate early and often. • Send monthly or bimonthly newsletters. • Use the “Accelerator”. • Have an open door policy.

  6. An ounce of prevention • Provide a safe environment. • Screen each staff member. • Keep things in good repair. • Deal with aggressive behavior. • Do not ignore accusations of injury or abuse. • Have a parent orientation.

  7. An ounce of prevention • Schedule an opening night parent/staff fellowship. • Explain the handbook. • Explain “slanted news.” • Use parent conferences. • Utilize communications envelopes. • Do not let parents neglect their financial responsibilities.

  8. An ounce of prevention • Document problem behavior. • Discipline properly. • Exercise discipline fairly and consistently. • Set discipline policies. • Keep parents informed. • Have on file an activity release form. • Have a usable emergency phone number.

  9. A pound of cure A. Remember certain things before the conference. • Expect parents to have a strong bias. • Realize parents may overreact. • Understand parents may be upset. • Use Biblical principles as the key to problem solving.

  10. A pound of cure • Start on a positive note. • Do not propose your solution first. • Leave minor statements unchallenged. • Use active or reflective listening. • Describe the problem. • Use statements of fact. • Avoid generalizations.
