  1. Argumentative Essay, Lesson 4: Planning & Drafting Body Para. 1 Objective: To outline/plan the first body paragraph in order to draft C.C.C.S.: W8.1 Reminder – There will be a notebook check. This notebook check will be 80% of your grade. All notes are expected to be CLEARLY labeled, see below, and dated. STAY ON TOP OF THIS! Do not fall behind.

  2. Things you need to know…. Purpose of the argumentative essay – convince readers of your position by using both factual research and emotional testimony Factual research (found in the Achieve3000 packets) should be relevant to the thesis statement and supportive of the argument. Arranging the information in an organized and logical manner is critical to making sure that your reader sees and understands your point

Ms. Blume’s prewriting example First – sort through and manage all of the research that you have found (the quotes, the anecdotes, the examples, the facts, the statistics, and even any of your own reactions you may have had while reading) Second – organize your essay starting with your support You will need two body paragraphs which means two main ideas/reasons. Each of these reasons needs multiple supports so start by grouping together any information that relates to one another – they can be grouped together to become your first body paragraph Third – determine what your main idea/reason in By reading through the 2-3 pieces of support you have grouped together, you should be able to see what they have in common and what you are trying to prove – that becomes your topic sentence

Par. 1 - Introduction • Par. 2 - 1st Main Idea/Point • Support 1 (stat, fact, anecdote, quote…) • Support 2 (stat, fact, anecdote, quote…) • Concluding/wrap up sentence • Par. 3 - 2nd Main Idea/Point • Support 1 (stat, fact, anecdote, quote…) • Support 2 (stat, fact, anecdote, quote…) • Concluding/wrap up sentence • Par. 4 - counterargument & rebuttal • Main idea/reason • Rebuttal with support • Concluding/wrap up sentence • Par. 5 - conclusion

  5. Start Planning – body paragraph Being writing your outline in your notebook – if you need to refer to the structure, you can find it in your first day of note (May 2 or May 5)
