Play different games with your students (depending on size of the club)
Multimedia • Watch English movies with Japanese subtitles (appropriate ones!). • Listen to popular English songs. • Have the students listen and try to write out a few lyrics. (Beatles, Lady Gagaga) • Reading day • They can read any thing they want, as long as it’s English (Manga, novel, homework).
English club is not just about speaking English, but also about learning about other English speaking cultures. • Cook food from other cultures. • Learn about other festivals and customs.
Managing the speech contest • High school English club manages the speech contest for the local middle schools. • The high school students will moderate and give announcements to manage the speech contest. • It takes a lot of preparation and planning, but it is a big deal for the students and practicing is absolutely necessary. • HS ALTs will need to go through each line with their English club students to make sure they have correct pronunciation of their announcements.
Speech contest • Volunteer/selected middle school students will participate in a speech contest. • They will have to fully memorize their story and recall it on stage. • They are judged on pronunciation, memorization and presentation.
Speech contest cont’d • As a high school ALT, you will most likely be asked to judge this contest. • As a middle school ALT, it will be your job to practice the speeches with your students. • Every school is different, some allocate time for preparation, some require you to meet after school with your speech contestant students.
Eiken exam • The Eikenexam is a test that evaluates English skill. • High school students study for and take the Eiken exam to help them get into a university. • Some students may ask you to help them study. • You can give them a mock verbal interview test. A JTE teach you how to give the practice interview.
Eiken exam cont’d • The EIKEN grades are given in two stages. The first stage is a paper-and-pencil test that evaluates reading, listening, and writing ability. The second stage is a speaking test in the format of a face-to-face interview. An examinee must pass both stages of a grade in order to receive certification. The second stage is not given for the two beginner levels, Grades 4 and 5.
Eiken exam cont’d • Junior high school – It is less common for junior high students to take the Eiken, but if they can score a 3 it will help them get into a good high school.
