Verbs • Definition: expresses an action or a state of being- you cannot have a complete sentence without a verb • Three types of verbs: • Action verb • Linking verb • Helping
Action Verb • Expresses a physical or mental action • Example: The boy walked into his classroom.
Practice • African farmers grow coffee. • Much rain falls in the tropical forests. • Many tourists visit the jungles. • Europeans established colonies in Africa.
Linking Verb • It links the subject to a word that identifies or describes it in the predicate. • Examples: • The girl is a ballerina. • He feels sick.
Practice • Some farmers appear content with their lives. • The country is rich in copper. • The copper industry grows successful. • A common food in Zambia is corn porridge.
Helping Verbs • helping verb: The part of the verb phrase that helps the main verb (action or linking) tell about an action or make a statement. • Example: The students should have had Reading Workshop today.
