  1. Freeganism By: Allie Baer & Jacqueline Simeone

  2. What is freeganism? • Freeganism is a lifestyle movement that avoids material consumption and lives as simply as possible, sometimes off the waste (left-overs) of others. • Freegans believe in living morally correct free, and happy lives centered around community and the fact that a healthy society must function on interdependence.

  3. Dumpster diving anyone? Many freegans get their food from the trash cans that are in each of our communities. We are constantly throwing away food that has either gone bad or that we just don’t want anymore. Our uneaten nutrients help these types of people survive. Not only can one find food while ravaging through trash cans, but also one could discover clothing, furniture, and/or household items.

  4. Say No to Money Freegans do not participate in the labor force or use money. They distinguish themselves from the normal economy. Therefore, freegans do not participate in daily activities such as grocery shopping, dining, going to the movie, etc. Money is not an obstacle for them because it is simply not an option.

  5. Free Markets Free markets are completely free social events where freegans can exchange goods instead of throwing them away. They can also share skills, give presents, and eat food. A free store is a temporary market where people exchange goods and services without the use of money.

  6. Pros and Cons The positive side of freeganism: • It saves money. • It makes wasted food useful. • It helps reduce the volume of waste in landfills. The negative side of freeganism: • It may be illegal. Garbage may be the property of the owner(s) until the garbage men take it. • Freegans have an increased risk of suffering from food illness. They have a lot of expired dairy and do not know how the dairy was taken care of before. That’s the same with all other food; they do not know how it’s been taken care of.

  7. Valid or complete nonsense? • It is hard to state whether or not we believe in this movement. Rightly, our waste is not being unexploited because of Freegans. They utilize our leftovers, which makes it resourceful. This creates an equal balance between cost and usage. Wrongly, these people are somewhat committing a crime. Although, depending on the jurisdiction ruling in particular locations, it may be legal. It is overall unsanitary. Eating from a disposal where many insects call home is extremely gruesome to us. Also, looks may be deceiving. Just because food is fine to the eye, doesn’t mean the stomach aggress as well. We both agree that as long as we love our job that pays enough to pay for food then we will stick to doing that rather than dumpster diving.
